Controlled Burn at Wauconda High School on April 21

Message from D118:

Wauconda Community Unit School District 118 and TGF Forestry and Fire, in collaboration with the Village of Wauconda Public Works, Wauconda Fire District, and Wauconda Police Department, will be conducting a controlled burn at Wauconda High School on Sunday, April 21, 2024. This controlled burn aims to achieve specific conservation and land management objectives.

While controlled burns are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and reducing the risk of wildfires, it's crucial to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity. Here are some important safety measures to keep in mind:

  1. Stay Informed: Pay attention to local news and announcements regarding the controlled burn operation. Updates may be provided regarding the timing and extent of the burn.
  2. Keep Windows Closed: To prevent smoke from entering your home, keep windows and doors closed during the burn operation. This will also help maintain indoor air quality.
  3. Limit Outdoor Activities: If possible, avoid spending extended periods of time outdoors, especially in areas close to the burn site. Smoke and ash particles can pose respiratory hazards.
  4. Protect Vulnerable Individuals: Individuals with respiratory conditions, such as asthma or bronchitis, pregnant women, children, and the elderly, should take extra precautions. Consider temporarily relocating vulnerable individuals to an area with cleaner air if necessary.
  5. Follow Instructions from Authorities: If authorities issue any evacuation orders or advisories, adhere to them promptly. Your safety is of utmost importance.
  6. Be Mindful of Traffic: Increased smoke and reduced visibility may affect driving conditions. Exercise caution if you need to travel during the burn operation.
  7. Report Emergencies: In case of emergencies or if you observe any unusual developments related to the controlled burn, contact emergency services immediately.

D118 is committed to ensuring that the controlled burn operation is conducted safely and efficiently. However, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the upcoming burn, please don't hesitate to contact the Buildings and Grounds Department at 847-526-4642.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Together, we can help protect our community and environment.

Sincerely,

District 118 Administration
